Microstation Consultancy: Programming and Batch Operations
Microstation has a range of options, from simple macros to VBA sripting, to automate processes that need to be carried out on a set of drawings or that need to be carried out on a regular basis. In general terms, if what you're doing feels repetitive, it can probably be automated. Scripts can be assigned to a function key so that they can be run when required, can be set to run automatically when drawings are opened or closed, or even set as a batch operation that is applied to directories of drawings that all need the same fix.
In a recent assignment we were sent over 400 drawings that needed fixing and the client had initially estimated that it would take more than 15 minutes per drawing to carry out the rectifications. As all the problems arose from using a flawed seed file and incorrect design file settings, the same problems were found in every single drawing. A script was developed in a day that was run on all the drawings in a batch operation and we were able to send the client back the amended drawings the following morning.
